

Erwin Roebroeks explains that there were two interesting developments at the NatLab. On the one hand there was ’Le Poème Électronique‘ where they worked on for the Philips Pavilion at the world exhibition in Brussels. Edgard Varése created the music, Le Corbusier the images and Xenakis build the pavilion. That music was a milestone in history and in the development of electronic music.
At the same time the period of popular electronic music started at the NatLab. Philips wanted to test the market to see if it was possible to enlarge electronic music and to make it more popular. And they appointed a number of people for this purpose.
Dick Raaijmakers explains that he got the job to make popular music. Popular music for the people. And how would that sound? They had no idea. Those things did not exist. And that is where he worked on and then his name was established in no time.
